Waiheke Island Day Trip Itinerary

A Waiheke Island day trip itinerary from Auckland: the 9:00 ferry, the 10:00 bus, a headland walk, a beach and lunch, and the way back (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

A day trip to Waiheke from Auckland fits comfortably between the 9:00 ferry and an early-evening sailing home: about 40 minutes across, the Western Explorer bus from 10:00, then a walk, a beach and a long lunch, choosing two or three stops rather than all 16. Fullers360’s ferry and hop-on hop-off ticket covers the transport for from US$59 a person (checked October 2026); food, drinks and tastings are paid on the day.

The times are a plan, not a timetable: the Western Explorer runs every 30 or 60 minutes depending on the day and the season, so allow for a wait at each stop.

Map of Waiheke Island: the ferry arriving at Matiatia at the western end, Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi along the north coast, Ostend and Kennedy Point to the south, Whakanewha on the south coast, the zipline inland near Onetangi, Man O' War Bay and Stony Batter at the far eastern end
The ferry lands at Matiatia; Oneroa is a walk or a short bus ride away, Onetangi further along the north coast.

Three ways to fill it

Beaches and a village. Oneroa has about a kilometre of sand below the village, Little Oneroa a playground and lawn next door, and Onetangi, on the north coast, about 2 km of beach with bars and restaurants along The Strand. Safeswim shows the live water quality for each of them; the beaches guide compares them.

A walk from the ferry. Te Ara Hura, Auckland Council’s 100 km walking network, starts at Matiatia: the headland track goes round to Cable Bay, Owhanake Bay and Oneroa village, and you can take the bus back from there. Follow the Te Ara Hura marker posts.

The zipline. EcoZip’s three dual ziplines and guided bush walk take about 3 hours, with pickup at Matiatia, from US$84 a person (checked October 2026); take an early ferry and do it in the morning, then spend the afternoon at a beach. The zipline does not include the ferry, so pair it with a return ferry ticket, from US$37 a person. Waiheke zipline has the weight and age rules.

Getting back

The late afternoon is where days go wrong. Guests on the ferry and bus ticket in June and September 2026 wrote that vineyards and restaurants had closed by mid-afternoon or early evening, and one waited at a stop after the last bus had gone. Note the last Western Explorer before you sit down to dinner, or use Auckland Transport’s 50A and 50B buses, which run from Onetangi through Ostend, Surfdale and Oneroa to Matiatia and mostly meet the ferries. The ferries themselves run late, to after 23:00 on weekdays.

A day or a night

A night on the island takes the hurry out: the beaches are quiet before the first boats arrive, and you can walk a longer stretch of Te Ara Hura. Is Waiheke worth it? weighs a day against a night and summer against winter.

The ferry and bus ticket’s times, voucher rule and loop are from its GetYourGuide listing, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026; ferry times, piers and sailings from Fullers360; the local buses from Auckland Transport’s Waiheke timetable effective 25 October 2024; Te Ara Hura from Auckland Council; the beaches from Auckland Unlimited and Safeswim; the two guest reports from the newest 350 GetYourGuide reviews of the ferry and bus ticket. All read in October 2026.
