Waiheke Island Beaches
The best Waiheke Island beaches for a day trip: Oneroa by the village, Little Oneroa, Palm Beach and 2 km Onetangi, how to reach each by bus, and water quality (Oct 2026).
Waiheke has about 25 beaches along 100 km of coast, and four do most of the work on a day trip: Oneroa, below the main village; Little Oneroa next door; Palm Beach, the next bay east; and Onetangi, the longest, at about 2 km on the north coast. The Western Explorer bus on Fullers360’s ferry and bus ticket stops at Oneroa and Onetangi, from US$59 a person (checked October 2026), and Auckland Transport’s local buses reach Palm Beach too.

The four beaches, side by side

| Palm Beach | The next bay east | A quieter bay between the two villages | AT bus 502 |
| Onetangi | North coast, middle of the island, about 2 km | A long walk on the sand, beachfront bars and restaurants | Western Explorer stop; AT buses 50A and 50B |

Oneroa and Little Oneroa
Oneroa is the island’s largest settlement, and its beach, about a kilometre long, runs below the village’s bars, restaurants and galleries, so a swim and lunch need no transport at all. At low tide you can walk along the shore to Little Oneroa, or take the track over the hill at any tide; Little Oneroa has a playground and a wide lawn, which is why families stop there. Both are within walking distance of the ferry if you take Te Ara Hura’s headland track from Matiatia.
Palm Beach
Palm Beach sits between Oneroa and Onetangi on the north coast, with the Palm Beach Reserve behind the sand. Auckland Transport’s 502 bus runs through it on its way between Matiatia and Ōmiha.
Onetangi
Onetangi is the island’s longest beach, about 2 km of sand on the north coast, with pōhutukawa trees for shade and bars and restaurants along The Strand. Both Explorer buses and the local 50A and 50B stop there. Auckland Unlimited suggests the Onetangi Forest and Bird Reserve for spotting dolphins and orcas.

Before you swim
Check Safeswim on the day. Auckland’s Safeswim service gives the latest water quality, tides, weather and swimming conditions for Oneroa, Little Oneroa, Onetangi and other Waiheke spots, pin by pin; conditions change, so look before you go in.
Alcohol bans. Oneroa Beach, the Onetangi Beach Strand and the Palm Beach Reserve are alcohol-ban areas from 10 pm to 7 am during daylight saving and from 7 pm to 7 am the rest of the year (Auckland Council).
Quieter bays. Auckland Unlimited names Enclosure Bay, Rocky Bay, Woodside Bay and Picnic Bay among the lesser-known beaches; they take a car, an e-bike or a walk on Te Ara Hura to reach.
The one-day itinerary fits two beaches into a day, and the bus guide has the routes.
Beach lengths, the number of beaches, the coastline and the lesser-known bays are from Auckland Unlimited’s Waiheke page; Little Oneroa’s playground and Onetangi’s beachfront from Fullers360; the bus routes from Auckland Transport’s Waiheke timetable effective 25 October 2024; Safeswim from safeswim.org.nz; the alcohol bans from Auckland Council’s Waiheke alcohol-ban maps; the ferry and bus ticket from its GetYourGuide listing, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026. All read in October 2026.
