Things to Do on Waiheke Island Without a Car
Things to do on Waiheke Island without a car: Oneroa, the beaches, Te Ara Hura walks, the zipline, a scenic flight and the Saturday market, by bus, on foot or e-bike (Oct 2026).
Without a car, Waiheke is a walk, a bus and a ferry: Oneroa village and its beach are a short walk or bus ride from the ferry, Te Ara Hura’s coastal tracks start at the wharf, and the Western Explorer bus reaches the vineyards, the olive grove and Onetangi Beach. Fullers360’s ferry and hop-on hop-off ticket covers the transport, from US$59 a person (checked October 2026); the zipline even collects you from the ferry.

On foot from the ferry
Te Ara Hura. Auckland Council’s walking network joins about 100 km of tracks round the island, in four areas: Headlands, Beaches ’n’ Baches, Forest Heart and Far End. The walks range from short and easy to more challenging, all of them connected, so you can start anywhere and finish wherever you like; follow the marker posts, and check the map for the stretches where dogs are not allowed. From Matiatia, the headland track goes round to Cable Bay, Owhanake Bay and Oneroa village, then loops back to the ferry.
Oneroa village. The island’s largest settlement has cafes, galleries and shops on the hill above its beach, about a kilometre of sand; Little Oneroa, with a playground and lawn, is next door. Both cost nothing but lunch.
By bus

The Western Explorer loops through 16 stops in about 80 minutes, daily from 10:00: vineyards such as Mudbrick, Cable Bay, Stonyridge and Batch, an olive oil tasting at the Allpress Olive Groves, Oneroa and Onetangi Beach. Auckland Transport’s buses link the same villages for a local fare: the 50A and 50B to Onetangi, the 502 via Palm Beach, the 501 to Kennedy Point.
Onetangi. The longest beach, about 2 km, with bars and restaurants along The Strand; both Explorer buses and the 50A and 50B stop there.
The Ostend Market. Every Saturday from 7.30 am to 1 pm in Ostend, on the local bus routes.
Shopping. Oneroa, Ostend and Surfdale have local art, gifts, jewellery and clothing shops.

Booked activities that collect you
The zipline. EcoZip’s 3-hour trip includes optional pickup and drop-off at Matiatia, a mini-tour on the way, three dual ziplines of more than 200 m over a vineyard and native forest, and a guided walk back. It is from US$84 a person, rated 4.9 from 784 reviews (checked October 2026); the ferry is separate. Waiheke zipline has the rules.
A scenic flight. Waiheke Wings’ 30-minute flight leaves from the island’s aerodrome, from US$112 a person (checked October 2026). Its Sea, Land and Sky package bundles the return ferry, the Explorer bus to the aerodrome stop, a longer flight and a glass of wine, from US$179 a person; flights run only in suitable weather.
A guided day. Fullers360’s Taste of Waiheke is a coach and guide with the ferry, an olive oil tasting, lunch and wine tastings, from US$163 a person, for adults.
By e-bike
Fullers360’s ferry and e-bike package, NZ$184, gives you a full-day e-bike, a helmet and a lock from the eRide shop at Matiatia, collected before 2 pm. It is for sealed roads only: the unsealed roads out east to Orapiu, Man O’ War and Stony Batter are off limits on these bikes. Riders must be 12 or over, accompanied by someone 18 or over, and at least 145 cm tall.
The far eastern end
Stony Batter Historic Reserve holds one of New Zealand’s largest Second World War coastal batteries, authorised in 1942 and built from 1943; only two guns were installed, and each was fired twice in a 1951 training exercise. Guided tunnel tours are temporarily unavailable while Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Man O’ War Vineyards take over as kaitiaki with the Department of Conservation; the reserve and its walking tracks are open (October 2026). Without a car it is a long way: 35 to 50 minutes’ drive from Matiatia, the last stretch unsealed, and closed to the hire e-bikes. Fullers360’s Eastern Explorer bus, Wednesday to Sunday, reaches Man O’ War Bay at that end of the island.
The one-day itinerary turns this into a day, and the beaches guide picks a beach.
Te Ara Hura is from Auckland Council; the Explorer buses, the e-bike package, the market, the shops and Oneroa from Fullers360; the local routes from Auckland Transport’s Waiheke timetable effective 25 October 2024; beach lengths from Auckland Unlimited; Stony Batter from the Stony Batter Tunnels site; the zipline, flights and guided day from their GetYourGuide listings, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026. All read in October 2026.
